How to Start Being Amazing… Right Now.
If you want to go further, accomplish more, and become amazing, you MUST master this one skill…
I was sitting in a high-level CEO business meeting yesterday with about fifteen of my friends who are all business owners and executives. The group is made up of business owners with start-ups to mega-million dollar brands. A unique group I’m privileged to be a part of, for sure. In our 5-hour long meeting there were a ton of great nuggets of wisdom passed around, but one stood out in particular toward the end of the meeting.
The leader of the group mentioned this nugget of wisdom and it was something I already knew, but constantly need to be reminded of.
Lots of people think to succeed at what they do they should be a ‘jack of all trades’ and do everything themselves. Be entirely self-reliant, right? Nobody can do it better than we can, so if we want to get the job done right we have to do it all ourselves. Lots of people think this is the way to succeed in their ventures, but the truth is that every activity you do that isn’t your particular ‘sweet spot’ dilutes your effectiveness and level of productivity.
This is often referred to as ‘Your best and highest use.’
In other words, there are many things you obviously CAN do, but that doesn’t mean you SHOULD do them all.
Instead of trying to ‘do it all’ (which will stress you out, frustrate you, and kill your level of effectiveness), focus on and commit to ONLY doing what ONLY you can do. Then, delegate the rest to somebody else.
Know what you’re REALLY good at, and choose to do only that thing because the truth is that you aren’t that good at doing everything else. Nobody is. But when you choose to ‘ONLY do what ONLY you can do’ (where you’re strongest and most effective, but others aren’t), you’ll experience less stress, be less overwhelmed, and get a lot more accomplished in a shorter period of time.
Growing up I was more or less taught this mentality: “Learn how to fix everything yourself. That way, you won’t have to pay someone else to do it.” While I understand this mindset, it’s wrong. Because the truth is that I might fix my leaky roof ‘good enough.’ But since I’m not skilled in that area it’ll take me longer to complete. Then, if I didn’t do something right, it can leak and fill my house with water when it rains. Then, I have to hire a real pro (which I could’ve done to begin with) to fix the roof again AND hire someone to fix my warped floors (because I’m no good at laying tile, either!). All of this, while I could’ve been out making more money than it cost to pay a real professional.
What is your business? What is your job? What are your key roles in life as a father, mother, husband, wife, or professional? Know your key roles and be AMAZING at them. Then, get others to help you out. It’ll save you time, money, and frustration by hiring somebody who is already great at what they do to begin with.
There are no ‘self-made’ anybodies. No self-made millionaires because they didn’t acquire millions of dollars by themselves. They didn’t teach themselves what it took to get there. Plus, they had to get that money from other people by convincing them to give it up. Without others, they wouldn’t have gotten to where they are.
If you’re actually a ‘self-made’ anything, the truth is that whatever you made probably isn’t that great.
Start being amazing today by focusing on and doing what you’re great at. Let others add their strengths to yours and the results can be amazing. And so can you!
